Re-Sanding Block Paving After Cleaning

What re-sanding is, when you need it, and what happens if you skip it.

Why does block paving need re-sanding?

When block paving is pressure washed, the high-pressure water clears out the jointing sand that sits between the blocks. This sand is there for a reason — it locks the blocks in place, prevents movement, and helps stop weeds from germinating in the joints.

After a thorough clean, those joints are often partially or fully empty. Without refilling them, the blocks can begin to shift and become unstable over time, and weeds will quickly start growing back into the gaps.

What does re-sanding involve?

Re-sanding is a straightforward process that's done after the paving has been cleaned and allowed to dry fully. The steps are:

  1. Allow the cleaned block paving to dry completely (usually 24–48 hours depending on weather)
  2. Kiln-dried sand is spread across the surface
  3. The sand is brushed into the joints using a stiff broom
  4. Any excess is swept off the surface
  5. A plate compactor may be used on larger areas to vibrate the sand down properly

The result is a fully filled, stable surface that's much better protected against weeds returning quickly.

⚠️ Don't re-sand immediately after cleaning. The paving needs to be fully dry first — usually at least 24 hours. Applying sand to a wet surface means it won't settle into the joints properly.

Do you have to re-sand after cleaning?

It's not always essential, but it is strongly recommended if:

If the joints were already well-filled and the blocks are stable, a top-up of sand may be all that's needed rather than a full re-sand.

Polymeric sand vs kiln-dried sand — what's the difference?

Standard kiln-dried sand is most commonly used and works well for the majority of block paving. It's cost-effective and easy to apply.

Polymeric sand contains a binding agent that hardens when water is applied, creating a firmer joint that is more resistant to weeds and ant activity. It costs more but can be worth it on areas with a lot of ant or weed problems. We can advise on which is best for your situation.

How much does re-sanding cost?

Re-sanding is typically offered as an add-on to a driveway or patio cleaning job. Prices generally range from £50 to £120 depending on the size of the area. When booked alongside a clean, it's always better value than as a standalone job.

💬 We always advise honestly — if your paving doesn't need a full re-sand, we'll tell you. We'd rather give you the right recommendation than upsell something unnecessary.
